PJs,Bed and Learning: Welcome to the Flipped Classroom!
Hi, everyone!
For this week's assignment, we created instructional videos for a flipped EFL classroom. You may think a flipped classroom is students teaching and teacher listening but it is not that. A flipped classroom is when students learn the content before class through videos, learning management tools, or other online platforms, and the actual class time is used for activities that are communicative and pair work like discussions, pair/group work, etc.
The benefits of flipped classrooms are that students can choose the time, and place they would like to learn the material, it is student-centered, it helps with specific learning difficulties through technology, it provides individual support, it engages students to learn actively and focuses on higher order thinking skills like evaluating and creating, it provides contact between parents and school.
The disadvantages are that it requires access to technology for each individual student and that might not be possible. Even if the students have access to technology there might be technological problems like internet connection. There might be problems because of teacher and learner attitudes. It can also take too much time for teachers to prepare these materials.
Actually, when working on our assignment (with Beyza, Nilüfer, and Sude) it took less time than I thought maybe I exaggerated it in my head but first we chose our unit which was unit 2 from the MEB English coursebook for grade 5 students. Since we took the vocabulary that was in the book and there were some explanations of the vocabulary as well, our job was easier. I think the hardest part was making the video but we made it like a presentation with animations through Canva and later added our voice recordings and some sound effects with Capcut. But overall, I'm very pleased with the result and I enjoyed doing it.
